The Price Evaluation series will review sets over time to identify which cards maintain their value long-term, and explain why certain cards may go up or down in price. This article will discuss the top 15 most expensive cards from Scarlet & Violet Base Set (SV01) as of July 2024. Each card will have both the Market and Low prices reflected on TCGPlayer to showcase true cost and “expected” cost for collectors.

Prices for Pokemon cards are primarily driven by pull odds, with most people opening packs in hopes of pulling some form of Illustration Rare. There are other factors, such as playability in the current TCG Meta, but this contributes less to price; this can be seen when looking at other versions of cards such as Gardevoir ex, where the “basic” version of the card is under $2 even though it is the most prevalent deck in the format at this time.

Cards I would buy now:

  • Gardevoir ex from this set has listings on TCGPlayer as low as $13 at the time of writing, which is significantly lower than the Market Price of $29.19. This card was printed again with a new Special Illustration Rare in SV: Paldean Fates featuring the “shiny” version of the Pokemon, causing this version to be less sought-after for now. I will be purchasing a number of these to hold onto and anticipate they will go back above $20 as players decide which artwork they enjoy more and prices from Paldean Fates settle out over time.
